10/17 Biology update and homework due 10/24
Hi folks,
Today we took the time to do a lab where we used different reagents to find lipids, proteins and carbohydrates in a variety of foods.
No recording for this week since the entire class was taken up with lab work.
I've included the table for your class below.
Also, read this website. It is the write up for today's lab and has much background information.
Also, please answer the following questions.
1. List the four biological molecules as well as their monomers.
2. What are carbohydrates better known as?
3. Where are 3 good places to find starches? Where did you find starches in the lab?
4. How do plants store glucose?
5. How do animals store glucose?
6. What kind of a biological molecule is cellulose? What does it do?
7. When it comes to energy storage which holds more energy, lipids or carbohydrates?
8. What kinds of atoms can be in a protein molecule?
9. How many different amino acids are there?
10. Name two structural proteins and tell what they do.
11. What proteins are considered regulatory proteins?
12. What are the 4 bases in DNA?
13. What are the 4 bases in RNA?
14. What two tests did we do to look for carbohydrates? Why didn't the tests find table sugar? Where did you find carbohydrates in the lab?
15. What test did we do to try to find lipids? Where did you find lipids in the lab?
16. What test did we do to find proteins? What happened when the solution was in the presence of proteins. What did we find proteins in during the lab?
17. Where do liquid fats (oils) generally come from?
18. Where do solid fats generally come from?
19. What can be done to turn plant oils into solid forms?
20. Why do plants have fats?
21. Would you expect to find fats in a cashew?
