9/12 Biology Update and homework due 9/19

Hi folks,

Today we did a whirlwind tour of basic chemistry in order to get everyone ready for the upcoming "Basic Molecules of Biology" block of class.  Here's the link to my favorite (yes, I'm geeky enough to have a favorite) periodic table website.  We also took a look at the many ways water is amazing and absolutely vital for life as we know it.

Homework:

Memorize the following elemental symbols.
Carbon C, Nitrogen N, Oxygen O, Hydrogen H, Sodium Na, Chlorine Cl, Phosphorous P, 

Read the book pgs. 31- 34

Read the book pgs. 39 - 42 up to "Solutions"

Do Section 1 Review on pg. 34 #'s 1-6 and 8.

Do Section 3 Review on pg. 44 #'s 1 - 3 and 7

Also draw a stable molecule using as many of the following elements as needed:

H  & O

N & H

C  & H

C  & H  & O

C  & H  & O  & N

5/1 Biology class and homework due 5/8

  Hi folks, We got into the plant kingdom today and got into some of the basic classifications and into the purposes of some plant parts.  We will get into this a bit deeper next week if we have time. I've include the pictures from this week's lecture as well.  You'll notice that I put the monocot vs dicot table on  there for you as well. There will be a quiz on archaea, bacteria and what we've covered so far in plants so be sure to spend some time with that.  Be sure to focus some time on the differences between monocot and dicot plants. For homework next week read pages 583-602. Do questions 1 - 18 on page 604.
