9/26 Biology update and homework due 10/2

Hi folks, Today we took a bit of time to cover the importance of pH and the importance of salts to living things.  That allowed us to spend a good amount of time discussing the concept of homeostasis.  Last but not least, we began our discussion of the biological molecules. For homework this week: Read this  website  regarding homeostasis and answer the following questions that can be found in the reading. 1.  What are three things cells need to survive? 2.  What is homeostasis? 3.  What is negative feedback?  4.  What is positive feedback?   5.  Which is more common in biological systems, positive or negative feedback? 6. Give 3 examples of negative feedback. 7.  Give an example of positive feedback. 8. Give three examples of homeostasis in mammals. 9.  What is the job of the endocrine system? 10.  What are two basic ways disease and cellular malfunction can be caused? 11.  How does nutrition play a role in home...

9/19 Biology Update and homework due 9/26

Hi folks, Today we spent some time looking a bit deeper at the seven characteristics of life and the hierarchy of organization.  We also spent some time doing a lab looking at the solubility of water vs. salt. For homework this week I want you to do a lab write-up for today's lab.  I've included a lab template below to give you some guidance. For the graphing section, do a very simple bar graph representing the amount of salt dissolved in water vs. rubbing alcohol (AKA, isopropyl alcohol.  Turns out it's slightly different than ethanol.)  Also, in the conclusion section of the lab report, I'd like you to put forth an argument  as to why the water was so much better than the alcohol at dissolving salt (hint: polar).  Be sure to do some research on the internet to back up your argument and to provide actual numbers for the solubility of salt in water vs. salt in rubbing alcohol.   On last thing,  there's a bit of extra work here compared to a normal...

Biology class is ON for tomorrow

Hi folks, Just wanted to let you know that class will take place tomorrow as scheduled. See you all then! Jim Mueller (919) 907 3217

9/12 Biology Update and homework due 9/19

Hi folks, Today we did a whirlwind tour of basic chemistry in order to get everyone ready for the upcoming "Basic Molecules of Biology" block of class.  Here's the link to my favorite (yes, I'm geeky enough to have a favorite) periodic table website .  We also took a look at the many ways water is amazing and absolutely vital for life as we know it. My best of luck to all of you through the next few days.  I hope everyone is safe and comfortable! Homework: Memorize the following elemental symbols. Carbon C, Nitrogen N, Oxygen O, Hydrogen H, Sodium Na, Chlorine Cl, Phosphorous P,  Read the book pgs. 31- 34 Read the book pgs. 39 - 42 up to "Solutions" Do Section 1 Review on pg. 34 #'s 1-6 and 8. Do Section 3 Review on pg. 44 #'s 1 - 3 and 7 Also draw a stable molecule using as many of the following elements as needed: H  & O N & H C  & H C  & H  & O C  & H  & O  & N

Biology classes

Hi folks, Just to let all know, we will be holding class tomorrow. From what I've seen, we shouldn't be getting any severe weather until Thursday or Friday. However, PLEASE be safe! I'll be recording the class as always so you can watch it when you wish if you want to miss class. Best of luck to everyone! Jim Mueller

9/5 Biology Update and Homework due 9/12

Hi Everyone! Every week, I'll be sending out an email with a quick summary of what we did in class. I also send a recording of each class so that folks who miss class or who would like to review the material can take a look. That is usually posted to YouTube within 24 hours. The recordings are "unlisted" so that they can only be viewed by folks who have the link. This week we covered some administrative stuff such as homework, quizzes, grade reports and we went over a basic syllabus for the year. We also talked a bit about what is science and why it's important. For homework this week: Read pages 5 - 19 in the text book Answer questions 5 - 21 on page 26.
