1/30 Biology Recording - More Evolution

Hi folks, The camera was doing strange things so this is the video from my Chapel Hill class.  Same material just different classroom. https://youtu.be/bKkmbvMAFAQ Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

1/30 Biology update and homework due 2/6

Hi folks, Today we took the time to dive a bit deeper into evolution and discuss genetic drift and the Hardy-Weinberg principle. For homework, please write at least a paragraph essay on your thoughts as to whether or not humans are evolving.  Tell me your evidence for your argument.  Some thoughts on things to include in your essay: Darwin's postulates, Harvey-Weinburg, adaptations, survival of the fittest.  Something to keep in mind for this is that evolution is a change over time.  It is not necessarily a positive or negative change, just an overall change in the gene pool over time. Also please do the following questions that relate to the lab we did this week. 1. What did the poker chips represent?  Why did we use two different colors of chips? 2. What was the original gene frequency of the F and the f alleles before selection occurred?  3. How did the gene frequency of the F and f alleles change by the 10th generation (or at least as far as you got)?...

Nevermind the laptop. :)

Hi folks, What I was planning on using the laptop for will work better next week.  If you can bring one next week (I'll send a reminder) that would be great. See you all soon! Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

Please bring lab top to class tomorrow

Hi folks, If you can, please bring in a laptop to class tomorrow.  We are going to be running a computer simulation for part of class tomorrow and if a few folks bring in laptops we can do it in groups. Thanks! Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

1/23 Biology update and homework due 1/30

Hi folks, Today we dove a bit deeper into the concept of evolution. We took a look at how the theory came about and how the theory works. For homework this week please read pages 277 - 290. We are not going to spend much time on this in class but it's fascinating material on how life may have come to be on Earth. Also finish chapter 15 by reading pages 308 - 310. Do Question 2 and questions 4 - 16 on page 312.

1/16 Biology update and homework due 1/23

Hi folks, Today we spent some time breaking rules. Mendelian genetics rules that is. We learned about a few of the exceptions to the basic heredity through dominant and recessive genes. We also began our next block on evolution. Read pages 302-306 and do questions 1-8 on page 307. Also, make your own quiz. Create questions based on the following concepts and then solve the questions. I'll give you 3 points of extra credit if I end up using your question on an upcoming quiz. Have fun! 1. Typical Mendelian genetics problem that can be solved using a monohybrid cross. 2. Typical Mendelian genetics problem that can be solved using a dihybrid cross. 3. Incomplete dominance problem that can be solved using a monohybrid cross. 4. Codominance problem that can be solved using a monohybrid cross. 5. A blood type problem problem that can be solved using a monohybrid cross.
