Link for the 2/27 Biology Recording

Whoops, watching the recording is going to be a lot easier if I send the link.  Here you go. https://youtu.be/4nu_T_k8QlI Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

Recording of 2/17 Biology Class- Clarifying Evolution Quiz Questions

Hi folks, Just a short one this week since most of class was lab work. Also, this is the recording from the Chapel Hill class but the material is identical for both classes Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

Data Sheets for Natural Selection Lab

Hi folks, Here is the data from the natural selection lab.  The numbers represent the distance in meters that the "birds" flew.  The bottom set of data on each page represents the stats from the bird in the last generation that flew the furthest.

2/27 Biology update and homework due 3/13

Hi folks, First off NO CLASS NEXT WEEK.  Next week is spring break for us so there won't be class.  Enjoy the time off (or…take the time to do some extra studying…your call.  :)   ) This week we took a bit of time to review some of our most recent quiz questions.  It looks like we are getting a good handle on the evolution concepts but I wanted to make sure a few key points are clear.    With that in mind, we also did a very interesting lab today.  Using a paper airplane design as a model bird, we explored how random mutations and natural selection could slowly evolve a species into one that is more fit for its environment. For homework this week please answer the following questions about today's lab.  I've included data from each of my biology classes so you can see a larger sample size.  The write up for the lab is on page 314 and 315 in your book if you wish to refer to it. 1.  What was "selecting" for the successful bird? 2....

2/20 Biology update and homework due 2/27

Hi folks, This week we got into the concept of classification of organisms.  We also took a bit of time to use a dichotomous key to classify some "creatures" into their genus and species names. For homework next week: Read pages 337 - 350 in the text book Do questions 5 - 23 on page 352 Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217

2/13 Biology class update and homework due 2/20

Hi folks, This week we wrapped up our discussion of evolution by looking at the process of how organisms can evolve to become two distinct species. For homework this week read pages 317- 330 Do questions 2 6-19 21 - 25

1/6 Biology update and homework due 1/13

Hi folks, Today we dove a bit more into the nitty gritty of evolution and investigated a simulation that allowed us to manipulate the evolution of a population of strange creatures.  We also had a fascinating discussion about whether or not humans are evolving.   For homework this week I'd like to take the time to review much of what we've covered throughout the year so far.  Please do all the following questions and be sure to study them because they will probably be on an upcoming quiz. 1.   What is the definition of hydrophilic? 2.     What is it about water that makes it polar? 3.  Draw the following  functional  groups. a.  Amino b.  Hydroxyl c.  Phosphate d.  Carboxyl 4.  Draw the 4 biological  molecules. 5.    Give four examples of homeostasis. 6.     What does mRNA do? 7.  What does tRNA do? 8.  What is transcription? 9.  What does DNA Polymerase do? 10.  What ...

Laptops tomorrow!

Hi folks, Don't forget those laptops tomorrow if you can bring them.   See you tomorrow. Best, Jim Mueller (919) 907-3217
